England 3 Sweden 2
They said that he’d be cautious
and would make the purists nauseous
but in fact the game was thrilling to the marrow.
One-nil up and two-one down
before the forwards went to town,
it ebbed and flowed just like the tide at Barrow.
They said that he’d be pensive,
try to play it quite defensive
but in fact the English goals were quite exquisite.
And what a goal to win it
in the sixty somethingth minute!
Three goals isn’t being defensive, is it?
They said he’d set his stall out,
pack the box to keep the ball out
but in fact the Swedes discovered lots of spaces.
They would all stream forward, sparking
a reluctance for close marking,
with players picked up on an ad-hoc basis.
They said (with hint of censure)
that he didn’t do adventure
but soon their staid predictions sounded hollow.
And with Rooney now returning,
are the English fortunes turning,
though trophy-lifting doesn’t always follow?
